Bettina
I was somewhat unnerved while making this little drawing of my mother, as though I was looking into a mirror that miraculously ages its subject by 30 years. While my mother and I share certain traits in common—hair, mouth, and mannerisms most distinctly—I have never thought we looked that much alike. Yet, in this portrait, I see so much of myself! I am reminded yet again of what a perception-bending exercise drawing can be; even my mother's face, a most familiar subject, holds little revelations accessible only through pointed observation. I wonder what I will notice the next time I draw her.
